LAW 106 Criminal Procedure

COURSE NAME:  LAW 106 CRIMINAL PROCEDURE

Course Description (Detailed Syllabus is released upon registration)

Students will learn the essentials criminal procedures.  Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1) explain how state and federal courts are organized, why the Supreme Court encourages plea bargains, and trace the trial process from jury selection to verdict, 2) discuss the essential steps in a typical appeal process, what the exclusionary rule is, what arrest and search warrants are, 3) describe what Miranda rights are, why officers must read them, and what it means to waive their Miranda rights and what pleading the 5th means, and 4) explain why a defendant has the right to have legal counsel; why defendants are allowed bail and why some are not; what the right to trial by jury involves and why some defendants waive their right to have one.

Course Grading and Policies

1. Points from:  Lessons, Assignments, Tests, Classroom Discussion, and Course Portfolio are factors in grade point calculation.
2. A = 90% – 100%, B = 80% – 89%, C = 70% – 79%, D = 60% – 69%, F = 59% and Below.
3. Late Assignment Policy: If unable to complete assignments or tests on time, please contact your instructor before the due dates.  Assignments or tests submitted after the due date without appropriate excuse and pre-approval will receive a zero score.

Award Upon Completion

The student will receive 3 Credit Hours upon completion of this course.
